Covington is the worst city in Kentucky for ghost listings — 2 of its 3 operators are ghosts. Covington sits right on the Ohio River across from Cincinnati, and the Northern Kentucky market is flooded with cross-border operators and shell listings trying to capture both Kentucky and Ohio search traffic.

Louisville has the most ghost listings by volume — 5 of 27 operators. That's 18.5%, which means roughly 1 in 5 Louisville dumpster rental listings is a ghost. In the state's largest city, with the most options available, you still have to navigate around 5 phantom operators.

Lexington is the cleanest major market with only 1 ghost out of 9 operators — an 11.1% rate that's still above the national average but significantly better than Louisville or Covington.

1. The Cincinnati border effect. Northern Kentucky (Covington, Florence, Newport) shares a metro area with Cincinnati.
