Yard Waste Disposal: Every Option Ranked

You finished the landscaping project. Now the driveway is piled with branches, the curb has bags of leaves, and there's a stump in the corner you have no idea what to do with.

Yard waste disposal is simpler than construction debris — most of it is compostable and many cities offer free pickup. But the options vary wildly by location and material type.

Option 1: Municipal Yard Waste Pickup (Free - $50/year)

Most cities offer curbside yard waste collection — either weekly during growing season or year-round.

What they typically accept:

  • Grass clippings
  • Leaves
  • Small branches (under 4 feet long, under 4 inches diameter)
  • Garden waste (plants, weeds, flowers)
  • Brush (bundled)
What they don't accept:
  • Tree trunks and large limbs
  • Stumps and root balls
  • Dirt and rocks
  • Treated or painted wood
  • Construction lumber
How to prepare it:
  • Paper yard waste bags (most cities require these, not plastic) (Home Depot — $8-12 for 5 pack)
  • Branches bundled with twine, under 4 feet
  • Loose brush in a designated cart or bin
Check your city's rules: Search "[your city] yard waste pickup schedule" for specific requirements.

Option 2: Municipal Drop-Off / Compost Facility (Free - $20/load)

Most counties operate a yard waste drop-off site or compost facility where you can bring material yourself.

Cost: Often free for residents (with proof of residency) or $10-20 per load.

Accepts: Almost everything organic — branches, stumps, brush, leaves, grass, logs.

You need: A truck or trailer. Yard waste is bulky.

Option 3: Chipping and Mulching (Free)

Turn your yard waste into usable mulch:

  • Rent a wood chipper(Home Depot rental — $100-200/day) — feed branches and brush through, spread chips as mulch in garden beds
  • Chip drop programs — arborist companies often need to dump wood chips somewhere. Sign up at chipdrop.com and they'll deliver a free truckload (you accept whatever they bring)

Option 4: Burn It (Free, if legal)

Some rural and suburban areas allow open burning of yard waste with a permit.

Check before you burn:

  • Local burn ordinances (many suburban areas prohibit it)
  • Burn permit requirements (usually free, available from fire department)
  • Air quality restrictions (no-burn days during dry/smog conditions)
  • Distance from structures (typically 50+ feet minimum)
Never burn: treated/painted wood, trash, leaves in dry conditions, or anything near structures.

Option 5: Dumpster Rental ($250-400)

For major landscaping projects — tree removal, hedge clearing, garden overhaul — a dumpster makes sense.

What fits in a 10-yard dumpster:

  • 3-4 medium tree removals (branches and limbs, not stumps)
  • Full hedge clearing of a fence line
  • Season's worth of accumulated brush
  • Garden/bed cleanout of a large property
Important: Most operators accept yard waste in standard dumpsters. Some offer "green waste only" containers at a discount since the material is compostable.

Don't put dirt, rocks, or stumps in a standard dumpster without confirming with the operator first — these are heavy and may incur overage charges.

Option 6: Junk Removal Service ($100-400)

Services like 1-800-GOT-JUNK handle yard waste. Cost depends on volume:

VolumeCost
1/4 truck (a few branches, bags of leaves)$100-150
1/2 truck (medium landscaping project)$200-300
Full truck (major clearing)$350-500
