Oregon Has 3x the National Share of Badly Rated Dumpster Companies

Corrected October 2026. An earlier version of this post counted listings rated under 3 stars as "ghost listings" and compared that number with a national average that didn't include them. That overstated Oregon's ghost-listing rate (we published 21.8%; the like-for-like figure is 9.1%). The numbers below use one definition throughout.

Oregon doesn't have a ghost-listing problem. It has a different one.

We pulled every dumpster rental listing Google showed for Oregon in April 2026: 55 companies. Two numbers matter.

On empty listings, Oregon is average. On badly rated ones, it ranks first of the 37 states with at least 40 listings in our data. One Oregon listing in eight is a real business that its own customers rate below 3 stars.

Why the difference matters

A listing with no reviews tells you nothing. It might be a new company or a lead-generation page. A listing with 40 reviews and a 2.6 average is the opposite: lots of people hired this company and many of them regretted it. Those are the calls worth avoiding.

Where it shows up

Portland is the healthy part of the state. Of its 20 listings, none is empty and only 1 is rated under 3 stars.

Salem is the outlier. A third of its listings are rated under 3 stars, and two more have no reviews at all. Only four of the nine come with a track record you can read.

Who customers rate well

Twenty-seven Oregon companies combine a 4.5-star or better rating with at least 25 reviews. These five have the highest DCS Scores:

The median Oregon listing has 72 reviews, the highest of any state we measured (nationally it's 29). Most Oregon companies have enough history to judge, so the job is reading it.

How to read a low rating

• Sort reviews by newest. A 2.8 average built on complaints from 2019 matters less than three one-star reviews from last month.
• Look for the same complaint twice. Surprise weight fees, late pickups and driveway damage are the patterns that repeat.
• Read the owner's replies. A company that answers complaints with a refund or a fix is a different bet from one that argues or stays silent.
• Get the quote in writing, including the weight allowance and the price per extra ton.

Data comes from Google Places, pulled in April 2026: 6,304 dumpster rental listings nationwide. "No reviews" means zero reviews or no star rating. "Under 3 stars" means at least one review and an average below 3.0. State rankings include the 37 states with 40 or more listings. The [DCS Score](/methodology) is our 100-point rating built from public data. No company pays to be listed or ranked.
