22% of Oregon Dumpster Rental Companies Are Ghost Listings. Here's the Data.

We scored every dumpster rental operator in America. All of them. 6,304 companies. 50 states. Real Google data, real reviews, real scores.

Oregon landed in the top 5 worst states for ghost listings — and nobody saw it coming.

The Headline Number

21.8% of Oregon dumpster rental companies are ghost listings — Google Maps entries with zero reviews, a sub-3.0 star rating, or both. That's more than double the 9.5% national average across the 6,304 operators in our dataset.

Out of 55 dumpster rental operators listed in Oregon, 12 are ghosts. That means roughly 1 in 5 Oregon dumpster rental Google listings has no verifiable history, no real reviews, or a rating so low it signals serious problems.

What Is a Ghost Listing?

A ghost listing is a business listed on Google Maps that shows one or more of these red flags:

  • Zero reviews — nobody has ever reviewed them publicly
  • No star rating — Google has no rating data at all
  • Sub-3.0 star rating — so many bad experiences that the average is below 3 stars
These aren't just "new businesses." Many have been sitting on Google Maps for months or years without accumulating a single review. Some share phone numbers with other listings under different names. Some use residential addresses or virtual office spaces. They exist to capture your call, give you a quote, and either deliver terrible service or sell your contact information to another company.

Worst Cities for Ghost Listings in Oregon

Not all Oregon cities are equally affected. Here's where the problem is concentrated:

CityTotal OperatorsGhost ListingsGhost Rate
Salem9555.6%
Gresham2150.0%
Beaverton4125.0%
Eugene8225.0%
Portland2015.0%
Salem is the worst city in Oregon for ghost listings — more than half of all Salem dumpster rental listings are ghosts. If you're renting a dumpster in Salem, you're essentially flipping a coin on whether you'll reach a legitimate operator or a phantom listing.

Portland, by contrast, is remarkably clean. Only 1 of 20 Portland operators is a ghost listing. The larger, more competitive market weeds out the fakes faster because real operators with real reviews dominate the search results.

---

Why Oregon?

A few factors explain why Oregon's ghost rate is more than double the national average:

1. Small total market, outsized impact. Oregon has only 55 total operators. It takes just 12 bad actors to push the rate above 20%. In a state like Texas with 728 operators, 12 ghosts would barely register.

2. Salem's state-capital vacuum. Salem is Oregon's second-largest metro but has far fewer established haulers than Portland. That vacuum attracts fly-by-night operators who set up Google listings to capture "dumpster rental Salem" searches without investing in real equipment or service.

3. Portland's dominance. Portland's dumpster rental market is healthy and competitive, but it sucks up most of the state's legitimate operators. Outside the Portland metro, competition is thin — and thin competition means more room for ghost listings to survive unchallenged.

How to Avoid Ghost Listings in Oregon

1. Never hire a company with fewer than 10 Google reviews. If they've been in business long enough to rank on Google Maps, someone should have reviewed them by now. 2. Check the DCS Score. Our scoring system specifically penalizes operators with no reviews, no website, and incomplete business information. If a company scores below 40, skip it. 3. Be extra cautious in Salem. With a 55.6% ghost rate, your odds of hitting a legitimate operator on the first call are basically a coin flip. Start with the operators listed above or check our [Oregon directory](/dumpster-rental/oregon). 4. Verify the physical address. Google the address. If it's a house, a virtual office, or a UPS Store, you're probably looking at a ghost listing. 5. Ask for the weight allowance in writing. Legitimate operators will email you a clear quote. Ghost listings give vague verbal quotes and hope you don't follow up. 6. Use the [size estimator](/tools/size-estimator) to know what you need before you call — so you can evaluate whether the quote makes sense.
