Dumpster Rental Sizes Explained: 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40 Yard Compared

The number one mistake people make when renting a dumpster is getting the wrong size. Too small and you're paying for a second delivery. Too big and you're paying for air.

I've made both mistakes. The 10-yarder I ordered for a kitchen gut was full by noon. The 30-yarder I rented for a garage cleanout was barely a quarter full when they picked it up. Both times I overpaid.

Here's every standard dumpster size, what actually fits inside each one, and how to pick the right one the first time.

40 yard22' × 8' × 8'12 pickup trucks6-8 tons$500-800Full house demo, commercial
The "pickup truck loads" column is the most useful comparison. If you can picture how many trips to the dump your project would take, you know which dumpster to get.

10 Yard Dumpster — The Starter

Dimensions: 12 feet long × 8 feet wide × 3.5 feet tall Holds: About 3 pickup truck loads Weight limit: 2-3 tons (4,000-6,000 lbs) Cost: $250-400

The 10-yard is the smallest standard roll-off dumpster. It sits low to the ground — only 3.5 feet tall — which makes it easy to load. No ramp needed, you can toss stuff over the side.

Good for:

  • Single bathroom remodel (fixtures, tile, vanity)
  • Garage cleanout (one car bay worth of stuff)
  • Small landscaping (bushes, sod, branches)
  • Basement declutter
  • 1-2 rooms of carpet and padding removal
Too small for:
  • Kitchen renovations (cabinets + appliances fill it fast)
  • Roofing projects (shingles are heavy and bulky)
  • Whole-house cleanouts
  • Any project with concrete or dirt
Pro tip: If you're doing a bathroom demo — removing the tub, vanity, toilet, tile, and drywall — a 10-yard is tight but doable if you break materials down. If you're keeping the tub, you'll fit everything else easily.

15 Yard Dumpster — The Sweet Spot

Dimensions: 16 feet long × 8 feet wide × 4 feet tall Holds: About 5 pickup truck loads Weight limit: 3-4 tons (6,000-8,000 lbs) Cost: $300-450

The 15-yard is the most underrated dumpster size. Not every company offers it — some jump straight from 10 to 20. But operators that carry a 15 often have the best pricing because they serve the residential market more precisely.

Good for:

  • Medium-sized renovation (bathroom + hallway, or a large bedroom gut)
  • Deck or fence removal
  • Attic or basement cleanout
  • Flooring removal (2-3 rooms)
  • Medium landscaping project
The 15-yard advantage: It costs $50-100 less than a 20-yard and handles 80% of the same projects. If your gut says "maybe a 20?" — try a 15 first. You can always get a second one if needed, and two 15-yarders still costs about the same as one 20 plus overweight fees.

15 Yard Dumpster Cost

The national average for a 15-yard dumpster rental is $350-400 including delivery, pickup, and a standard rental period of 7-14 days. Weight is the variable — most operators include 3-4 tons. Going over means $40-75 per additional ton.

20 Yard Dumpster — The Most Popular

Dimensions: 22 feet long × 8 feet wide × 4.5 feet tall Holds: About 6 pickup truck loads Weight limit: 4-5 tons (8,000-10,000 lbs) Cost: $350-500

The 20-yard is the most commonly rented dumpster in America. It handles the widest range of projects, and it's what most operators recommend if you can't decide.

Good for:

  • Kitchen renovation (cabinets, countertops, appliances, flooring)
  • Roof tear-off (up to 25 squares of shingles)
  • Large deck or shed demolition
  • Multi-room flooring replacement
  • Estate cleanout (typical 3-bedroom house)
  • New construction cleanup
The 20-yard tradeoff: It takes up about one and a half parking spaces on your driveway. If driveway space is tight, measure before ordering. You need 22 feet of clear length.

30 Yard Dumpster — The Renovation Size

Dimensions: 22 feet long × 8 feet wide × 6 feet tall Holds: About 9 pickup truck loads Weight limit: 5-6 tons (10,000-12,000 lbs) Cost: $400-600

Same footprint as the 20-yard but 1.5 feet taller. That extra height adds 50% more volume. If you're debating between a 20 and a 30, the 30 is usually the smarter bet — the price difference is $50-100 but you get 50% more space.

Good for:

  • Major renovation (kitchen + bathroom + flooring across the house)
  • Large roof tear-off (25-35 squares)
  • Full room additions
  • Fire or water damage restoration cleanup
  • Commercial office buildout
  • Large estate cleanout (4+ bedroom house with garage and attic)
Watch the height: At 6 feet tall, you can't just toss heavy items over the side. You'll need to use the rear door (most 30-yarders have a swing door) or a loading ramp for heavy debris.

40 Yard Dumpster — The Heavy Hitter

Dimensions: 22 feet long × 8 feet wide × 8 feet tall Holds: About 12 pickup truck loads Weight limit: 6-8 tons (12,000-16,000 lbs) Cost: $500-800

The 40-yard is the largest standard roll-off dumpster. It's 8 feet tall — you absolutely need the rear swing door to load it. This is commercial-grade equipment.

Good for:

  • Whole-house demolition
  • Commercial construction cleanup
  • Large commercial renovation
  • Industrial cleanouts
  • New construction debris (multi-story building)
Most homeowners don't need a 40. If you're not doing a full house demo or a commercial project, the 30-yard covers it. The 40 is also harder to place — make sure your driveway or staging area can handle 22 feet of length and a truck that needs 60+ feet to deliver.

How Weight Limits Actually Work

This is where people get surprised on the bill.

Every dumpster has a weight limit — typically 2-6 tons depending on size. The rental price includes disposal up to that weight. Go over, and you pay $40-75 per extra ton.

Heavy materials that eat weight limits fast:

  • Concrete and asphalt: 2 tons per cubic yard
  • Dirt and sand: 1.5 tons per cubic yard
  • Roofing shingles: 250 lbs per square (10'×10' area)
  • Wet debris (after rain): 2-3x heavier than dry
Light materials that fill volume but not weight:
  • Household junk and furniture
  • Drywall (relatively light)
  • Wood framing
  • Cardboard and packaging
  • Insulation
The rule: If your debris is mostly concrete, dirt, or shingles, size down on volume and ask about weight capacity. If it's household junk and wood, size up on volume because you'll hit capacity before weight.

The Decision Framework

Still unsure? Use this:

How many rooms are you touching?

  • 1 room → 10-15 yard
  • 2-3 rooms → 15-20 yard
  • Half the house → 20-30 yard
  • Whole house → 30-40 yard
What material dominates?
  • Mostly junk/furniture → size up (light but bulky)
  • Mostly construction debris → standard sizing
  • Mostly concrete/dirt/shingles → size down, prioritize weight capacity
How long is your project?
  • Weekend project → standard 7-day rental
  • Multi-week renovation → ask about extended rental rates
  • Ongoing construction → ask about swap service (they empty and return)
