Weight Warning

Granite and tile will blow past your weight limit

Kitchen remodels are deceptive. The dumpster looks half-empty but it's already at the weight limit. Here's why:

  • -Granite countertops: ~25 lbs/sq ft. A standard L-shaped kitchen counter (40 sq ft) weighs 1,000 lbs. An island adds another 400-600 lbs.
  • -Ceramic tile flooring: ~2,500 lbs per cubic yard. A 150 sq ft tile floor with mortar bed can weigh 1,200+ lbs.
  • -Concrete backer board: Often hiding behind tile backsplash and under tile floors. Adds 300-500 lbs you weren't expecting.

Always confirm the included tonnage and per-ton overage fee with your Baltimore hauler before booking. A 20-yard dumpster typically allows 4,000-6,000 lbs — a full kitchen gut with granite can hit that limit fast.

How to load a kitchen demo dumpster

1. Flat and heavy first

Lay countertop slabs and tile flat on the dumpster floor. This creates a stable base and keeps the center of gravity low.

2. Cabinets next

Break down cabinet boxes if possible — remove doors and shelves. Stack flat to maximize space. Whole cabinets waste 40-60% of dumpster volume.

3. Drywall and flooring

Drywall sheets stack efficiently. Layer them between bulkier items to fill gaps. Flooring planks can fill spaces around cabinet frames.

4. Small debris last

Broken tile, nails, trim, and misc demo debris fills gaps at the top. Do not let small debris pile above the dumpster rim — haulers cannot legally transport overloaded containers.

Kitchen remodel dumpster timeline

A full kitchen remodel takes 1-3 weeks from demolition to finish, but you do not need a dumpster for the entire project. The demo phase — when all the debris is generated — typically lasts 5-7 days.

Schedule your dumpster for demo only. Most Baltimorehaulers include 7-10 days in the base rental price. If you keep the dumpster sitting through weeks of installation, you'll rack up daily overage fees for a container that's just taking up driveway space.

Pro timing: Have the dumpster delivered the morning of demo day. Load as you tear out. Schedule pickup as soon as demo is complete — typically day 5-7. If your contractor handles demo in phases (upper cabinets first, then lowers, then flooring), a 5-day rental window is usually plenty.

Kitchen demo tips that save money

Remove appliances separately. Refrigerators and freezers contain refrigerants that require certified removal under EPA rules. Many Baltimore haulers charge $25-75 extra per appliance with Freon. Instead, schedule a separate appliance pickup or haul them to a scrap metal recycler — you may get paid for the steel.

Separate recyclable metals. Stainless steel sinks, copper pipes, brass fixtures, and aluminum trim have scrap value. Pull them out before they disappear into the dumpster. A kitchen's worth of scrap metal can offset $50-100 of your dumpster rental cost.

Protect your path to the dumpster. You will be carrying sharp tile, heavy granite pieces, and splintered wood through your home. Lay down Ram Board or heavy cardboard from the kitchen to the exterior door. Protect hardwood floors, door frames, and landscaping along the route.

Donate usable cabinets. If your existing cabinets are in decent shape, Habitat for Humanity ReStore and similar salvage shops in Baltimore will often pick them up for free. This keeps volume out of your dumpster and you get a tax deduction.

What customers say

Real reviews from Baltimore customers

This is a great company. My normal guy had some issues and I needed a dumpster asap. Ace roll off came to the rescue. I will be recommending them to everyone I know and using them for any future needs. Great customer service from the front office to the people who drop off and pick up the dumpsters.

We needed a dumpster for old materials and debris. Hired Packer's Dumpster Rentals and they were fantastic, delivered on time, placed it exactly where we needed, and picked it up promptly when we finished. Reliable, professional, and easy to work with. We’ll be using them again for future jobs!

Great experience with Toss-It. Easy to book, dropped the dumpster off right when they said they would, and pickup was quick and efficient. No issues at all and pricing was straightforward. Would definitely use them again and recommend to anyone who needs a dumpster in the Baltimore area

Kitchen remodel dumpster FAQ

What size dumpster do I need for a kitchen remodel?

For a partial kitchen remodel (replacing cabinets and countertops but keeping the layout), a 20-yard dumpster is usually enough. For a full gut renovation — tearing out cabinets, countertops, flooring, drywall, and appliances — you will need a 30-yard container. If your kitchen has granite or stone countertops, confirm the weight limit with your Baltimore hauler because stone is extremely heavy.

How heavy is kitchen remodel debris?

Kitchen demo debris varies dramatically by material. Granite countertops weigh approximately 25 lbs per square foot — a typical 40 sq ft of granite countertop adds 1,000 lbs alone. Ceramic tile weighs roughly 2,500 lbs per cubic yard. Wood cabinets run 50-100 lbs each. A full kitchen gut with stone countertops can easily reach 3,000-5,000 lbs total, so always check your dumpster's weight allowance before loading in Baltimore, Maryland.

Should I remove kitchen appliances separately?

Yes. Many haulers in Baltimore charge extra for appliances containing refrigerants (refrigerators, freezers) because they require special handling under EPA regulations. Dishwashers, ovens, and microwaves can go in the dumpster, but you will save money by scheduling separate appliance pickup or taking them to a scrap metal recycler — you may even get paid for the metal.
