Batteries

Prohibited — Cannot Go in Dumpsters

Disposal Rules

Batteries of all types — alkaline, lithium-ion, lead-acid, and rechargeable — are prohibited from dumpsters. They can cause fires, leak acid, and contaminate landfills. Lithium-ion batteries are especially dangerous.

Pro Tip

Tape the terminals of lithium-ion batteries with electrical tape before storing them for recycling to prevent short circuits.

What to Do Instead

Home Depot, Lowe's, and Best Buy have battery recycling drop-offs. Auto parts stores accept car batteries for free.
